QUOTABLES!
quote of the day
[Ed Sheeran] has asked my advice. And what I've said to him is, 'Slow down. Don't burn it all up too fast.' But he seems to be committed to go as far as he can. He wants to conquer the globe. But what do you do then? Where do you go from there? It can't always be up—for anybody.

My least favorite band-name cliché is [blank] the [blank], where the first blank might be CAGE and the next one ELEPHANT, or YOUNG followed by GIANT, or, you get the idea, with the middle word being THE, which is the annoying part. (Note to self: GET THE IDEA might actually be a good name.) Why are they always rock bands? Why isn't there a country band called EXIT THE HIGHWAY? (Note to everybody else: Please don't.) I have a list of a dozen such bands on my IPHONE, all currently going concerns as far as I know, and I have an irrational fear of every one of them. I am human the man and that is my right, and that is why I resisted hitting play on PORTUGAL. THE MAN's "FEEL IT STILL" for a very very (it's embarrassing exactly how) long time. The period didn't help. But I finally did and then I was like, oh, right, that song. That irresistible single with that irresistible retro dance bassline and that surprisingly irresistible falsetto vocal that rings of a thousand lesser bands trying to do the same retro dance thing and that undeniable "I'm a rebel just for kicks" hook (which I am doing my best to assume has nothing to do with FOSTER THE PEOPLE's "PUMPED UP KICKS"). The video is interactive and cool and explicitly political. The song is supposed to be political, too, and I'll have to take the band's word on that. I love that frontman JOHN GOURLEY's parents both ran the IDITAROD, which I'm guessing is a BILLBOARD HOT 100 first, and that he's connected to reality enough to have multiple friends who could tell him that the title of P.TM's 2017 album, WOODSTOCK, is "the f***ing stupidest thing I've ever heard." I love that a great pop single can come from anywhere, at any moment, with no rhyme or reason except that there was an invisible space that needed to be filled and it knew exactly how to fill it. I love surprises. The followup single, "LIVE IN THE MOMENT," has la-la-la's and is catchy and sounds a bit too much like a bid for more syncs, but it also may simply be letting us know that there are more hooks and more easter eggs available, should the pop gods ever come calling again... MEEK MILL, in jail on PHILADELPHIA on a controversial sentence for a probation violation, was denied bail Monday because he is a "danger to the community," which, um, have you seen some of the people who *have* been granted bail in this country lately?... Director BRYAN SINGER fired from QUEEN biopic "BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY" in the middle of filming. The HOLLYWOOD REPORTER says there was tension between Singer and his star, RAMI MALEK... NOAH CALLAHAN-BEVER jumps from COMPLEX to DEF JAM.
