QUOTABLES!
quote of the day
John Donne ... the poet-priest who lived in the time of Shakespeare, wrote these words, 'The Sestos and Abydos of her breasts. Not of two lovers, but two loves, the nests.' I don't know what it means, either. But it sounds good. And you want your songs to sound good.

I could spend the rest of the summer using this space to quote random passages from BOB DYLAN's NOBEL lecture, which in occasionally rhyming, enthusiastically detailed language ties THE ODYSSEY, MOBY-DICK and ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT to a long thread of 20th century AMERICAN music, including his own, not because of what any of it means, but because of how it sounds and how it feels and what it says about the human experience and what it doesn't say about the greatest mysteries, and it's either one of the best dissertations on popular music and literature anyone has written, or the only review of TRIPLICATE you need to read, or the cagiest recap yet of THE LEFTOVERS, which ended Sunday night as strangely and perfectly and musically on-point as any TV series ever has, and which kinda sorta shined a light on its own big questions while letting the mystery be... Look out SONOS, here comes the APPLE HOMEPOD with its "seven beam-forming tweeter array, a 4-inch upward-facing woofer and a library of 4 million songs." (Full disclosure: I love my Sonos setup and, with a simple streaming subscription, it's got all those songs, too. I don't know if my speakers have a three, five or seven beam-forming tweeter array, or what that means)... Airlines overbooking flights is old news, but promoters overselling festivals is new to me. If these leaked FYRE FESTIVAL emails can be believed—MIC says it has three confirmations from former fest staffers—the promoters apparently thought it was a good idea to unilaterally revoke first-week tickets from their "50 lowest paying customers" and give them upgraded second-week tickets in exchange. Which is literally what all those airlines you love to hate do. And that's not the worst revelation in the emails. Ctrl-F "bathrooms" and "toilet paper" and happy reading... Is it fair to prosecute the men who ran the GHOST SHIP warehouse where three dozen people perished in a fire in December—but not go after the owners of what officials say was an illegal party space? That's the lingering question in OAKLAND after DERICK ALEMA and MAX HARRIS (aka MAX OHR) were each charged with 36 counts of manslaughter Monday. Prosecutors haven't said if they're still pursuing the building's owners... Six years after ESPN dropped his "ALL MY ROWDY FRIENDS ARE HERE ON MONDAY NIGHT" as the theme song for MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL in response to him comparing PRESIDENT OBAMA to ADOLF HITLER, HANK WILLIAMS JR. and ESPN are back in business. Or, as SPIN puts it, "Hank Williams Jr. No Longer Too Racist for the NFL or ESPN"... "40 Years of Hip-Hop" mashed up into a delicious 3 minutes 55 seconds... BILL MURRAY in concert.
