quote of the day
If you've got anything about you, you're going to be doing stuff that is political whether you like it or not. You can't ignore things anymore. You just can't.

Is there an open lane on the music highway for PANDORA and its new on-demand streaming service? BLOOMBERG's LUCAS SHAW says the company is under some pressure to sell, with SIRIUS XM and LIBERTY MEDIA both standing by with wallets open. RECODE's PETER KAFKA boils Shaw's reporting down to this: "PANDORA ... now looks like a music streaming casualty." The company still thinks its Music Genome and its combined radio/on-demand offering will be the difference makers... Can a classic-rock icon effectively will himself out of the classic-rock canon? TIM QUIRK (my former boss at RHAPSODY) has written a "TURN THE PAGE"-worthy epic on the strange history of the BOB SEGER catalog, which has been largely out of print for decades, is all but absent from the internet (except of course for YOUTUBE), has never been compiled into a box set and is slowly disappearing from the radio. Thank the HOLLYWOOD gods for movie and TV syncs, which seem to be the only things keeping Seger alive in popular culture. Quirk suggests a combination of an obstinate, old-school manager and Seger's own deep-seated humility is to blame. He provides some eye-opening data on the results, along with a plea to take action and plenty of musical reasons why you should care... A frustrated Seger fan took some action on his own a few years ago, rescuing a chunk of Seger's '60s and early-'70s catalog from history's cache... Love the idea of this new STEREOGUM series, which will chronicle the history of covers of a classic track. First up: TEARS FOR FEARS, as interpreted by artists from GLORIA GAYNOR to LORDE and MAYER HAWTHORNE... ACMs, meet the CMAs... RIP GARY ARNOLD.
