The wolves of STUBHUB street: There are myriad reasons why trying to get concert tickets these days is about as much fun as trying to find an affordable apartment in SAN FRANCISCO. In a longread for THE RINGER, ex-TICKETMASTER CEO NATHAN HUBBARD focuses on one particularly insidious reason borrowed directly from the stock market. Short-selling is the practice of listing nonexistent tickets on resale sites with the expectation that the "seller" (in quotes because he or she literally has nothing to sell) can locate similar seats at a better price elsewhere once the "sale" is made. The short seller then pockets the difference. So, basically, while legislators are fighting simple desktop technology with anti-bots legislation, ticket sellers are playing with WALL STREET-sized bombs... And no one has much of anything to say about venues and concert promoters that, on average, offer fewer than half of the tickets for any given show for public sale in the first place.
