QUOTABLES!
quote of the day
The current practice of speculative ticket selling on resale sites is a plague on the live events industry, rife with fraud and egregiously misleading advertising. Oh, and it completely and utterly screws fans.

The wolves of STUBHUB street: There are myriad reasons why trying to get concert tickets these days is about as much fun as trying to find an affordable apartment in SAN FRANCISCO. In a longread for THE RINGER, ex-TICKETMASTER CEO NATHAN HUBBARD focuses on one particularly insidious reason borrowed directly from the stock market. Short-selling is the practice of listing nonexistent tickets on resale sites with the expectation that the "seller" (in quotes because he or she literally has nothing to sell) can locate similar seats at a better price elsewhere once the "sale" is made. The short seller then pockets the difference. So, basically, while legislators are fighting simple desktop technology with anti-bots legislation, ticket sellers are playing with WALL STREET-sized bombs... And no one has much of anything to say about venues and concert promoters that, on average, offer fewer than half of the tickets for any given show for public sale in the first place. Which I will continue to mention until someone else starts mentioning it... MIGOS omg yes thank you... Speaking of which, we've added a few stories to our REDEF MusicSET SINGLE-MINDED: Migos, 'Bad and Boujee' because they truly are one of the better reasons to be alive and listening to music right now... Cool interactive presentation from a new site called THE PUDDING charts 3,000 bands that played at least two shows in small clubs in NEW YORK between 2013 and 2016. I'm not so sure about the Pudding's criteria for determining that only 22 of those bands including SYLVAN ESSO, LONDON GRAMMAR and CHANCE THE RAPPER "hit it big," but the data and the presentation are impressive—and fun... MICHAEL JACKSON's daughter, PARIS, writes and sings songs that are "more LAURA MARLING than MJ," friend-of-REDEF BRIAN HIATT informs us in a ROLLING STONE cover story that demystifies one of the world's most mysterious middle children. But she's not sure she wants to be a singer. Her dad got her into TCHAIKOVSKY, DEBUSSY, TUPAC and RUN-DMC, and she has an AGAINST ME! sticker on her laptop. She believes her dad was murdered... BET's three-part THE NEW EDITION STORY continues tonight and concludes tomorrow... Elsewhere at VIACOM, congrats to AMY DOYLE, the new GM of MTV, VH1 and LOGO... JAKI LIEBEZEIT's best drumming outside of CAN... RIP LEE O'DENAT, aka Q, founder of WORLDSTARHIPHOP, and RONALD "BINGO" MUNDY of the MARCELS.
