All good things, they say, never last. As we say farewell to 2016, we remember the giants we lost this year. This long, dark, turbulent year. While the 22 remembrances below pay tribute to some of music's biggest losses, 22 stories can hardly say all we need to say or name all we want to name. So pour one out for these souls, too: Colonel Abrams, Mose Allison, Ernestine Anderson, Signe Toly Anderson, Lee Andrews, Issa Bagayogo, Paul Bley, Blowfly, Pierre Boulez, Don Buchla, Buckwheat Zydeco, Pete Burns, Guy Clark, Otis Clay, Tony Conrad, Connie Crothers, Joey Feek, Pete Fountain, Juan Gabriel, Christina Grimmie, Fred Hellerman, Bobby Hutcherson, Wayne Jackson, Sonny James, Bob Krasnow, Greg Lake, John D. Loudermilk, Richard Lyons, Lonnie Mack, Marlene Marder, Neville Marriner, Louis Meyers, Chips Moman, Scotty Moore, Alphonse Mouzon, Andy "Thunderclap" Newman, Marni Nixon, Milt Okun, Papa Wemba, Rick Parfitt, Billy Paul, Sandy Pearlman, Jean-Jacques Perrey, Prince Buster, Curly Putman, Leon Russell, Shawty Lo, Jean Shepard, Red Simpson, Kay Starr, Robert Stigwood, Dave Swarbrick, Toots Thielemans, Vanity, Naná Vasconcelos, Bobby Vee, Rob Wasserman, Glenn Yarbrough, Steve Young... And for every soul on the dance floors at Pulse and the Ghost Ship... NPR's Ann Powers on how we collectively mourned... MusicREDEF is taking a long New Year's weekend. We will return on Tuesday. Have a happy and safe new year... Correction: Bad Brains guitarist Dr. Know, who was originally listed here among those we lost in 2016, is very much alive.
