Anatomy of a breaking news story, from actual news to leap-of-faith to just plain wrong and back to earth again, all in the space of half a day: "SPOTIFY in Advanced Talks to Buy SOUNDCLOUD" (the original, actually reported, account). "Spotify Set to Take Over SoundCloud" (no, that's not quite what the story you're quoting said). "Spotify Is Buying SoundCloud" (now you're just making it up). "Spotify, SoundCloud Deal May Not Happen [New Report]" (that's literally what the original story said, so, cool, thank you for the update). So will Spotify buy SoundCloud? As of this writing, we don't know. RECODE's PETER KAFKA thinks it would be a good match between two services whose core content is decidedly different, especially if the buyer could "keep all of that uniqueness intact" in that which it is buying (easier said than done). QUARTZ's JOON IAN WONG says it would be a good match between unprofitable services looking to combine userbases in a fight to survive against better-funded rivals. I like it if it keeps SoundCloud in business and does so without messing up what's good about it: its free, easy access for both artists and fans, its treasure trove of mixes, remixes and other content that the more traditional services haven't found an easy way of providing, its indie spirit (indie as in a way of doing business, not a type of music)... The US SUPREME COURT has agreed to decide whether Asian-American rock band the SLANTS has a right to trademark its name, which the PATENT AND TRADEMARK OFFICE found to be disparaging and therefore ineligible for a trademark. (Watching this case closely: the NFL's WASHINGTON REDSKINS)... GAGA gets gargantuan game gig... It's FRIDAY and that means new music from NICOLAS JAAR, SURVIVE, SOLANGE, BANKS, DJ MUSTARD, JENNY HVAL, BON IVER, DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS, MACHINEDRUM, REGINA SPEKTOR, PIXIES, OPETH, VAN MORRISON, BOB WEIR, THE GROWLERS, WILLIAM MICHAEL MORGAN, JOHN PRINE, CRAIG DAVID, JOHN ADAMS, MR. OIZO, HERB ALPERT, ULTIMATE PAINTING, BLACK MARBLE, EZTV, SLAVES and EMMA RUTH RUNDLE.
