If you are what you listen to, then the U.S. presidential campaign boils down to girl power vs. class war vs. dude blasting random classic-rock tunes out of his CAMARO with the top down. PITCHFORK's ZOE CAMP investigates what the CLINTON, SANDERS and TRUMP campaigns are playing at their rallies and how they program it, from the CLINTON staff's "passionate" email chains (feel free to supply your own CLINTON email joke here), to the SANDERS campaign's balancing act between the candidate's own favorite music and the tastes of his youthful base (breaking news: classical music doesn't work so well at U.S. political rallies), to TRUMP's screw-the-advisers-I'll-program-it-myself approach. "When executed properly," CAMP writes, "the musical lead-up to a candidate’s speech unifies the crowd under a common cultural experience." Not unlike, say, pop music itself... This seems to be the year of people saying astonishingly stupid things and then blaming the public for reading or hearing exactly what they said. This week's unfortunate example is drummer LESLIE RASMUSSEN of DAYTON, OHIO, garage-rock band GOOD ENGLISH, who were removed from the lineup of BROOKLYN's upcoming NORTHSIDE FEST after her letter to a judge in support of her infamous childhood friend BROCK TURNER surfaced on the internet. I don't think most people have a problem with people trying to convince judges that, deep down, their prison-bound friends are decent dudes. I think they do have a problem with victim-shaming and astonishingly offensive assertions like "rape on campus isn't always because people are rapists." RASMUSSEN posted, and later deleted, a bizarre apology on FACEBOOK in which she said she was upset that people saw her letter in the first place and, in her view, misconstrued and distorted what she wrote.
