Hand a classic hip-hop album released in 1989 to a millennial critic born in 1992 and the result is the most controversial music piece to appear on the internet since, oh, maybe that time that guy wrote that thing about "LEMONADE." Even the controversy is now controversial. DAVID TURNER's light, silly piece on DE LA SOUL's "3 FEET HIGH AND RISING" -- which he doesn't like as much as anything by MAJOR LAZER or A TRIBE CALLED QUEST -- is not by any stretch "the worst case of clickbait contrarianism in music journalism history." The OBSERVER's RON HART, who actually wrote that, eventually hands the mic over to DE LA SOUL themselves, and they add some helpful perspective. "I was not offended by it; this is just one individual’s take," offers TRUGOY. "You can't take it seriously." Non-millennial critic SASHA FRERE-JONES, on the other hand, took it very seriously and loved it: "TURNER could have Googled for weeks and crammed and aped the ideas of his elders, but why? We have those reviews already." Me, I'd simply prefer that people of any age who choose to be professional pop critics not think of it as a "chore" to listen to any music that isn't in their comfort zone. And that they not chew their bagels and write at the same time... "It's artist vs. algorithm," declares THE RINGER atop a longread explaining why SPOTIFY's grade-A algorithmic programming is a superior weapon to APPLE's and TIDAL's A-list artist relationships. But it's possible SPOTIFY itself doesn't quite agree. The streaming leader has hired artist-management wizard TROY CARTER (LADY GAGA, MEGHAN TRAINOR, CHARLIE PUTH) to oversee artist relations (disclosure: CARTER's ATOM FACTORY is a REDEF investor) (disclosure #2: The boss likes this move)... PRINCE would have turned 58 today. TIDAL has added 15 PRINCE albums, including "THE BLACK ALBUM" and "THE GOLD EXPERIENCE," to celebrate... COACHELLA 2017 tix on sale WEDNESDAY. Time to start guessing which bands that broke up four or five years ago will headline.
