Microcosms... The #3 entry on BILLBOARD's Power 100 is this APPLE foursome: JIMMY IOVINE, EDDY CUE, ROBERT KONDRK and TRENT REZNOR. Notice anyone missing? Now look at the rest of the list and see if you can figure out who else is missing from a roll call of the, um, men who purportedly wield the power in the music business in 2016. I'm not sure what's scarier: that the list might somehow be accurate, or that enough people in the business might think that is... In completely related news, the LA TIMES' STEVEN ZEITCHIK on race and the GRAMMYS... (Also, I'll take ST. VINCENT and the guitar she designed that's "sympathetic to the female form" over just about every male on that list as an example of worthwhile music-biz power)... THUMP registers its disappointment in the electronic music portion of the GRAMMYS, which "came so close to being great this year -- what happened?" Which is kind of the entire story of the GRAMMYS. Every year they get our hopes up and every year they figure out a way to let us down... (But stop this year's show before it gets to the Big Four awards and it looks significantly better)... KANYE WEST releases an album that, as far as I can tell, is available only to people who bought IPHONES at three or four particular stores in one or two particular area codes, and who have a credit rating of at least 760, and whose last name starts with J, K, L or M, and is probably wondering why half a million people downloaded it illegally in a single day... (But I heartily endorse the postmodern concept that "THE LIFE OF PABLO" might not actually be finished yet, and might never be)... EAGLES OF DEATH METAL returned to PARIS last night, with a show that frontman JESSE HUGHES called a "sacred responsibility." HUGHES, a longtime supporter of gun rights, says surviving the mass shooting at Le Bataclan has not changed his mind on that.
