How exactly do we come to universally hate a band? The OBSERVER's SAGE LAZZARO sets out to investigate the roots of the world's anti-NICKELBACK obsession, and settles on a few key anti-moments: the band's initial signing with a metal label, ROADRUNNER, whose core audience was not inclined to be welcoming; a BRIAN POSEHN joke that went viral when COMEDY CENTRAL turned it into a promo; and the song "ROCKSTAR," which was meant to be ironic but you know how that goes. LAZZARO also zeroes in on the most disturbing aspect of NICKELBACK hate: frontman CHAD KROEGER's physical appearance and perceived lack of coolness. There isn't anything more uncool than judging someone based on that. Rock (and lots of other music, and lots of other art) has always been a haven for the uncool, the outcast, the different, the ugly, the beautiful. Embrace the uncool. If you don't dig the music, great. And no judgment intended against BRIAN POSEHN, a walking encyclopedia of metal and a paradigm of uncool himself. But if you think CHAD KROEGER is ugly or evil, maybe check the mirror. Not that he really cares. He gets the joke... MACKLEMORE (along with RYAN LEWIS, JAMILA WOODS, DUSTIN WASHINGTON and HOLLIS WONG-WEAR) has a dialog about dialog with SWAY... VULTURE surveys musicians to find out who streams (TORI KELLY, LEON BRIDGES, MILEY CYRUS) and who does not (BRITTANY HOWARD, PINK). Best anti-streamer: JENNY LEWIS, who prefers cassettes and who listens to just one side over and over, 'cause "that's how you truly get to know a record"... TRENT REZNOR and MICK JAGGER remember DAVID BOWIE... This isn't the first time it's been rumored, but BILLBOARD now swears RIHANNA's "ANTI" album will drop sometime between now and FRIDAY.
