TECHCRUNCH's rundown of how APPLE MUSIC handled its premiere of THE WEEKND's "I CAN'T FEEL MY FACE" video is a textbook example of how a streaming service can promote a major artist without asking for exclusive content. Keyword: programming. In a world where streaming is the dominant mode of music consumption, the line between a "premiere" and an "exclusive" may eventually disappear. But for now, if a service can get a piece of content a little early, promote it widely and smartly and not keep it away from competitors, that's a win for everybody... Best cosmic joke on the WEB this week is NEIL YOUNG pulling most of his catalog from streaming services but leaving behind his 1980s GEFFEN catalog, thereby reducing his oeuvre to his most widely hated work (including the wonderful synth-pop album "TRANS")... Second best cosmic joke is PRINCE releasing the very good new single "STARE" as a SPOTIFY exclusive less than a month after pulling his entire catalog off SPOTIFY and most other services... NOTORIOUS R.P.G. bones up on NOTORIOUS B.I.G.... It's FRIDAY and that means new music from LIANNE LA HAVAS, TITUS ANDRONICUS, MIGOS, ALBERT HAMMOND JR., BENJAMIN CLEMENTINE, THE MACCABEES... PIOTR ORLOV's "FIVE FOR A FRIDAY" is taking the week off... RIP BUDDY EMMONS.
