There's a big difference between being self-aware, open to criticism and pro-active in fixing issues vs. getting caught. The post-actions may be the same, but the circumstances and motivations are not. What happened at UBER is a shame for a myriad of reasons. But I'm thinking about this: During my time at VIACOM, I used to say that our problems (the barbarians) were outside the company. The competition, changing audience habits, new technologies and the like. But time and again, internal strife, problems the company brought on itself, and the inability to challenge the status quo, hurt us. You look at what Uber has built globally from product to jobs and it's really remarkable. And may continue to be. What's more remarkable? That this current situation was self-inflicted and had nothing to with the competitive and regulatory environment they faced and fought brilliantly. Fascinating. WAPO on why TRAVIS KALANICK is out. PANDO's SARAH LACY has a take on its current and future lot. HARVARD BUSINESS REVIEW thinks they can't be fixed and should be done. Investor ASHTON KUTCHER also comments. What do you think?... The tension between dominant platforms and partners. FOMO from partners can lead to some really devastating strategic mistakes... Three of my pals team up for a show about Jamaican music. I'm in. And did you know that 90% of all Jamaican vinyl records are in JAPAN?... I really fear the traditional television business is not prepared for the impending fall of the TV ad spend. We took at look a while back... It may feel like we're on boil but is this the simmering before the boil... NOBU hotel in MALIBU looks awesome... Is anything safe anymore?... One easy step to how to be depressed right after buying an 81-inch television... Happy Birthday to JUSTIN SHAFFER, ROB WIESENTHAL, FLORIS BAUER, STEPHANIE HUGHES, and ERIC GATOFF.
