I was having dinner last week at SOHO HOUSE in WEST HOLLYWOOD in the garden dining room. Something freaky happened. We were sitting at our table looking out at the beautiful view of LOS ANGELES and all of the sudden a drone came right up to the edge of the window. It sat their hovering for a minute and continued to circle around the perimeter of the top floor. It's LA so maybe just a kid or maybe a paparazzi. Who knows? But imagine the damage that can do. Imagine a sports stadium with a drone piloted by someone with ill intent. To me, it's a toy, but it really made me think. Reminds me of movies like BLACK SUNDAY... Was having lunch with a friend yesterday discussing the emerging popularity of domestic and international soccer and lamenting that no U.S. sport let alone soccer would ever have the guts to add the greatest mechanism of all professional competition: PROMOTION and RELEGATION. The financial stakes are too high. But it's one of the reasons why PREMIER LEAGUE is so damn interesting. Teams killing each other without a shot at the title... TOM FRESTON on VIACOM leadership... CMT makes a killer move and saves NASHVILLE from the scrap heap. High five... ROB GOLDBERG and I resumed our Friday cultural investigations to see POPSTAR: NEVER STOP NEVER STOPPING starring ANDY SAMBERG, host of SNL alums and 37,000 faces you know. I loved it. And really a must-see if you've even been in the music business. Both of us were and we laughed the entire time. Lots of BIEBER-esque situations. It's silly but so spot on even if only slightly exaggerated. No spoilers here but just look out for "perspective manipulator" and the TMZ send-up is brilliant. If you like LONELY ISLAND's digital shorts you'll like this. I could just as easily see this as a 30 minute show ala HBO's SILICON VALLEY. which is even more dead on and maybe not exaggerated enough sometimes. The movie isn't crushing the box office but this has "after-theater cult classic" written all over it... Oh, boy... Happy Birthday to EMANUELE DELLA VALLE, CAROLE ROBINSON, JAY HIGGINBOTHAM and RYAN MAGNUSSEN.
