GRATITUDE OF THE DAY: I joined MYSPACE in 2009, moved to LA and the situation was a bit overwhelming. I used to joke it was like the opening of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN every day mashed up with GROUNDHOG DAY. A few months in, I got a call from JIM GIANOPULOS, CEO of FOX FILMED ENTERTAINMENT. He welcomed me to NEWS CORP and wanted to pick my brain on digital media and distribution. We had lunch and all I could remember was showering him with questions about AVATAR which was 6 months from release. He saw I was stressed and the next day he did something awesome and kind. He asked JON LANDAU, the film's producer, to show me and some staff 45 minutes of the unfinished movie. I was like a kid in a candy store. Couldn't believe my eyes. Loved every minute of it. About a month ago when he heard I was going in for bypass surgery I asked that if I made it through ok could he show me an early screening of a movie we'd been discussing for over a year, THE MARTIAN. The story of a botanist/astronaut stranded on MARS. Always true to form like a good friend he kept his promise. So far, my favorite of the year. Everything HOLLYWOOD does right. It's a big movie with a personal story. Messages of humanity, innovation, ingenuity, hope, faith, trust, risk, cooperation, failure, hardship, team work, problem solving, spirit and perseverance. Watch the trailer, no more spoilers, but I think you're going to love it. As I've mentioned recently, these surgeries come stock with post-op melancholy. No reasons, just some grey, mostly at night. These acts of kindness keep my mind off of it and I can forget everything for a few hours which is one of the benefits of great movies and television (not to mention the boxes of DVDs he sent over). A good friend... Let JONY IVE soothe you... I wish I ran hires the way coaches run players on HBO's HARD KNOCKS. Clear cut... The U.S. political process, machine and coverage for the most part makes me embarrassed to be an American... These REDEF shoutouts make me happy. Here and here... Where's your luggage?...
