QUOTABLES!
quote of the day
I watched the World Series between the Diamondbacks and Yankees, and Randy Johnson—that old guy—his hand was shaking but he still throws the ball and they won. That was inspiring to me. If the guy who's old can beat the team from New York, I thought if you're young, you can learn to do that.

The last qualifier for the 2017 WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC was held this past weekend in CONEY ISLAND. BRAZIL, GREAT BRITAIN, ISRAEL and PAKISTAN competed for the final spot in the tournament. LINDSEY ADLER of DEADSPIN wrote a terrific piece on baseball in PAKISTAN, how the country came to embrace AMERICA's pasttime, and just how far it still has to go to compete with the rest of the world. Pakistan lost its two games by a combined score of 24-0, but it was still an experience of a lifetime for players and coaches... MATT BARNES made national headlines -- and got a name drop on KANYE WEST'S "THE LIFE OF PABLO" album -- last summer when he got into an altercation with DEREK FISHER. But there's more to his story than just being a tough guy on and off the court. CHRIS PALMER at BLEACHER REPORT spent some time with BARNES and put together a detailed look at how BARNES' upbringing shaped him... The NBA has always been dominated by superstars and superteams. Champions are remembered forever, but JASON CONCEPCION of THE RINGER gives some love to the greatest hipster teams of all time, the teams that didn't reach their championship goal, but won us over with their style of play and rosters full of misfit personalities. My personal favorite was the TRACY MCGRADY-VINCE CARTER RAPTORS, which didn't make the list, probably because they broke up before the duo ever did anything together... On TUESDAY, everyone was still talking about DEE GORDON's home run leading off the MARLINS' first game since JOSE FERNANDEZ passed away. GRANT BRISBEE perfectly captures the moment... Who knew AUSTRALIA had its own VIN SCULLY? A profile of DENNIS COMETTI as he prepares to walk away from 49 years broadcasting Australian rules football... Does ALEX SMITH strike you as a particularly interesting NFL quarterback? It turns out, per KEVIN CLARK, all he does is recommend obscure movies and TV shows to teammates... A simple, but powerful college football protest strategy.
