QUOTABLES!
quote of the day
We're not trying to create something purposefully scarce or purposefully luxurious, we're just trying to make the best possible thing we can.

Two highly respected designers, with vastly different creative outputs, address one thing they have in common in must-read interviews: distance. DRIES VAN NOTEN works and resides in ANTWERP, and ERROLSON HUGH has a studio in BERLIN, a business partner in BROOKLYN. For where he might be on any given day, check Berlin, MILAN, or TOKYO. Neither of these designers is new to the fashion industry, and they're both happily removed from fashion's quote-unquote capitals. Is this fashion by centrifugal force? Both seem to enjoy the technical side of design as much as the conceptual. Both have followings of die-hard loyalists who come from all ages (just look at WILLIAM GIBSON modeling ACRONYM with Hugh). Distance and dreaming are both central to fashion's appeal, and on distance, Dries has this to say: "Distance can be a border that you can’t cross, which is not good. But a healthy distance means you can look at things from a certain perspective, one step backwards or forwards, and you can see futilities more easily." Shoutout to both LOU STOPPARD and ROBERT GRUNENBERG for their fantastic interviews… The trailer for the Dries documentary is up, can’t wait… Much respect to WWD and BRIDGET FOLEY for giving us a responsible, and dare I say fact-based account of KARL LAGERFELD and MERYL STREEP’s conflict over an OSCAR dress. It's balanced. It respects everyone involved, and it turns out that a chain of miscommunication was the root of the feud... GRAILED is launching a site for women. The site's expanded rapidly as a hub for a community of fashion enthusiasts and collectors (I believe the technical term for this is "nerd" and that's in no way a pejorative). Exciting news. See also: enthusiasts make the best customers. "Fire for all" indeed... CALVIN KLEIN is making all the right moves: hires LUELLA BARTLEY, casts MOONLIGHT actors in ad campaign. What's next, sells a duotrigintillion pairs of CK underwear?... Do not miss this piece on LA-based shoe designer GEORGE ESQUIVEL. The oxford shoe he collaborated with CHLOE on is something I still think about (and wear)... WARREN BUFFETT, looking sharp on CNBC, talked about his suits, made by MADAME LI. Li is founder of the DAYANG GROUP, which began as a one-sewing-machine operation, and now employs around 15,000 people, per Buffett. Dayang made headlines last year for its $30M strategic investment in INDOCHINO... Given the news of this 2018 moon flight, the first question on my mind was the same one people ask themselves every day: "But what are you going to wear?"
