When I was in Grade 7, all the cool kids wore TOMMY HILFIGER (that includes TOMMY GIRL and TOMMY JEANS). It was so coveted that I remember cutting the label out of a worn-out TOMMY tee and sewing it onto a no-name hoodie in hopes the red and white label would buy me some extra social capital in the cruel abyss of middle school. (It didn’t.) So I thoroughly enjoyed this fascinating oral history of the rise and fall of TOMMY HILFIGER over at COMPLEX. It has everything: intrigue, gossip, and celebrity glamour. I think TOMMY will be able to bank on the 90s nostalgia trend sooner than later – last year FLARE reported that TOMMY is already a huge sales draw in vintage stores, and their zip-up fleece polos of yesteryear mesh perfectly with the haute thrift aesthetic that DEMNA is currently pushing over at VETEMENTS…TYRA BANKS is the latest celebrity to add “Professor” to her resume. She’ll be teaching a course on “personal branding” at STANFORD, which seems a bit rich. You don’t need to get an MBA to figure out how to work a personal brand, and if you do, then you’re worse off than the average 12-year-old… I also had to chortle at the news that MICHAEL KORS and RALPH LAUREN are having their bottom lines lopped off by discount retailers. I’ve been stumbling on their pieces in discount bins for years, to the point where I barely even view either as a high-end designer anymore. Time to tighten up those supply chains, boys.
