There's no one right way to run a fashion label, but if you're a young, promising designer, you're likely to encounter many who'll tell you that there is, and that it's their way. Say what you will about RODARTE, but it's tough to argue that its designers, LAURA and KATE MULLEAVY, have done anything but build exactly the body of work they've wanted. Their model may not be the most commercially-viable, as ROBIN GIVHAN explains in a must-read for THE WASHINGTON POST, but there's surely something to be said for keeping a tight focus rather than expanding your reach just because you can -- GEORGE MALLORY died on EVEREST, after all... Congratulations to model/actress HARI NEF and minimalist handbag label MANSUR GAVRIEL on their partnership. NEF, a trans woman who's walked for the likes of HOOD BY AIR and GUCCI and acted in the acclaimed AMAZON series "TRANSPARENT," is the new face of MANSUR GAVRIEL, and will star in their upcoming campaign. Ideally, casting a trans person in an ad campaign wouldn't register as a political act, but as long as we live in a world where anxiety over who's allowed to use which public restrooms drives hatred through mainstream politics, I'm thankful for companies like MANSUR GAVRIEL who are willing to make statements in favor of openness and against discrimination in their advertisements. Hope they sell a whole lot of handbags. Not that they've had any problem with that to date... Revisit NEF's recent TEDX talk, "#FreeTheFemme: The Aesthetics of Survival"... Finally, news we can use: a complete guide to a 56 of JUSTIN BIEBER's tattoos, each one more tasteful and well-considered than the last.
