Yesterday's big news: DEMNA GVASALIA, face of the VETEMENTS collective, is assuming the role of Creative Director at BALENCIAGA. I'm on the fence about this hiring. Haven't been moved by any of GVASALIA and his team's work with VETEMENTS -- you can read my thoughts on their past two collection here and here -- but there's no question GVASALIA's got the chops and pedigree to succeed at a major label. He's worked for both MARGIELA and LOUIS VUITTON, and VETEMENTS' key items are unconventional builds, so, yeah, dude can cut a pattern. I wonder how he'll manage the additional resources BALENCIAGA will provide him. Part of VETEMENTS appeal is how it, as GVASALIA says, takes "an expensive silhouette and deliberately subvert[s] the purpose of the garment by using a tacky material." How will this attitude translate to a luxury maison? I'm excited to find out, and wish GVASALIA nothing but success.
