The oddest thing about the ongoing debate on whether fantasy sports constitutes gambling is that there's a debate at all. It's a game of skill that you bet money on. Kind of like poker. Or betting on football games. As JOHNNY AVELLO, director of the sportsbook at WYNN LAS VEGAS, puts it, "I’ve been in this business all my life, and when you put up money on an event and you get a return on whatever the outcome of that event, it -- to me -- that is gambling." As the NEW YORK TIMES puts it with classic TIMESian understatement one paragraph later, "Trade groups for fantasy and organized gambling often dispute the semantics." Semantics are fun. Daily fantasy sports are fun, too. The TIMES on the curious collision of interests between a sports league, gamblers and daily fantasy players, and why this has gotten the attention of my old congressman, FRANK PALLONE. He represents NEW JERSEY, a state that would love to make some money off sports betting. The NFL and other leagues have successfully fought the state in courts. Something about wagering and the integrity of games... Thirty-four of 35 NHL players polled by USA TODAY say they'd be OK with a gay teammate. Kind of dying to know who the 35th player is... Same survey finds 25 of 35 players opposed to advertising on jerseys. Whether the NHL is about to make that happen remains unclear... The NBA is definitely heading toward more colorful socks... The price of beer at every NFL stadium. You will be shocked by #26. At least I was.
