Yesterday was a crap work day. Was gnawing on my molars when a documentary I had seen on VIMEO last year was on SHOWTIME. STRETCH AND BOBBITO: RADIO THAT CHANGED LIVES. It brought me back and totally rescued my mood. I was born and raised in NYC. I grew up in the NYC of the 80s and 90s. Hip-hop was pretty much my soundtrack. A world I knew nothing about but I loved it. How did I get into it? Well, my bus driver's son was BIG BANK HANK from the SUGAR HILL GANG and he gave me their record "Rapper's Delight". It popularized the genre. It was my first taste at 8 years old. in 1990, my friend TIMIR KARIA, who lived down the block from me on 96th street, introduced me to a radio show on WKCR 89.9FM: THE STRETCH ARMSTRONG AND BOBBITO SHOW. It was way down on the dial and you had to wade through static to get just the right signal (like cracking a safe) as NAS perfectly explains in the doc. I was never the same. I'd wait for the show to come on and tape it. Yes, cassette tape. I had to listen all week. God knows how much amazing music I heard there for the first time. Basically, what would become the canon. I absolutely remember hearing WU-TANG CLAN's "Protect Ya Neck" for the first time ever. I listened to shows from RED ALERT, MARLEY MARL, FUNKMASTER FLEX and others too. I dug them but these guys were "it" for me. It was such a special time in NYC. The DJs were stars. Different than what today's pop culture calls DJs. They were talent but also like the top bloggers of today. You looked to them for insight into the new. When they spun, you felt the energy of the city in your apartment. Live hosts and spinning mattered. I think it's why I loved BEATS 1 RADIO (especially Q-TIP's ABSTRACT RADIO show) so much when it launched. Music is unlike any other art form. Like a time machine it can bring you back to the exact moment associated. This documentary (watch at these services) did it for me. I can't go back. But I can remember... Don't know GIGI HADID but she just scored points for getting best hamburger in NYC right. A test I will give my future wife beforehand... Does the music business love YOUTUBE, hate YouTube, or both? We take a look in our new REDEF MusicSET: Dear YouTube... For me, it's just nuts that DONALD TRUMP could be picking a supreme court judge. It's different for him. He has no political constitution. I just can't... Cool Trailer: BAD INTERNET... This happened to me with a bottle of SASSICAIA and it's not fixed... Hug a QA person today. They are worth their weight in gold... Happy Birthday JONATHAN GLICKMAN, JOE MICHAELS, JENNIFER MILLER BROWN and JON DUBE.
