QUOTABLES!
quote of the day
The best way to come up with something new and different is just to be the you-est you possible. If you pull from all the different little parts of yourself, nobody can replicate that.

Ooh na na. It's been an unusually good couple years for singers breaking out of boy and girl groups, which has a lot to do with ONE DIRECTION, but it's been a long time since any such singer went solo with as much energy and potential as CAMILA CABELLO. Her debut, CAMILA, is out today, 13 months after her not-so-amicable split with FIFTH HARMONY and on the heels of the hottest pop radio single by a female singer in years. "HAVANA" is also one of the slinkiest grooves that's made its way onto pop radio in a long time. It rides a minimalist salsa piano figure and is named for the city where Cabello was born. She was raised in CUBA and MEXICO CITY, and if ever there was a time for pop to produce a sassy (and sultry) rebuke to US immigration politics by celebrating a young woman's roots in a non-s***hole town on a Caribbean island, this seems like a particularly good time. That sassiness spills over into "NEVER BE THE SAME," a power-pop blast that could make SKY FERREIRA or KELLY CLARKSON jealous, and the breezy, stripped-down pop of "REAL FRIENDS." STEREOGUM may be overstating the case with the headline "Welcome to Superstardom." Then again, it may not... A brutal 12 months for music journalism (THUMP!, MTV NEWS, LA WEEKLY, ATLANTA's CREATIVE LOAFING, the print edition of the VILLAGE VOICE) continues with layoffs at THE FADER... JOHN FOGERTY can not believe someone had the gall to name a movie "PROUD MARY," and he felt the need to issue a press release about it. The songwriters of "BOOGIE NIGHTS," "BOYS DON'T CRY" and "DAZED AND CONFUSED" could not be reached for comment... There is a crypto-currency band in JAPAN because of course there is... RIP FAST EDDIE CLARKE, who was the last surviving member of MOTÖRHEAD's classic lineup and one of the great underrated metal guitarists. He either quit or was fired, it's never been entirely clear, after objecting to the band covering "STAND BY YOUR MAN"—one of the most metal falling-outs ever... The surviving SMITHEREENS and guests including STEVEN VAN ZANDT and TED LEO will pay tribute to the late PAT DINIZIO Saturday night in RED BANK, NJ, and the show will be live-streamed starting at 8 pm ET... It's FRIDAY and in addition to Camila Cabello that means new music from ANDERSON EAST, BLACK REBEL MOTORCYCLE CLUB, BØRNS, SYLVAN LACUE, TYPHOON, MAXO KREAM, AVATAR, CORROSION OF CONFORMITY, NOAH KAHAN, YOUNG CHOP, TINSLEY ELLIS, UMPHREY'S MCGEE and a DIXIE CHICKS live album... MONDAY is MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY (and his actual birthday; he would have been 89). MusicREDEF will not publish that day. For your weekend reading and listening, here's a NEW YORKER playlist of MLK-themed songs, and, from the CADRE COMMENTS blog, a Christian analysis of U2's "PRIDE (IN THE NAME OF LOVE)." Have a great weekend and we'll be back Tuesday.
