Joseph Gordon-Levitt‘s HitRecord is winding down the production of its educational video offerings and collaborative projects with community members as the company’s top executives and team members join MasterClass.
HitRecord, an online collaborative site that Gordon-Levitt founded with his brother Dan Gordon-Levitt, began launching a subscription-based educational video service last fall, called “class projects,” that allows viewers to watch lessons taught by other HitRecord members, including Gordon-Levitt. Executives at MasterClass were inspired by the service and are now bringing over key members of the HitRecord team to bring their expertise over to the online subscription learning company.

As a result, co-founders Jared Geller and Gordon-Levitt will become vps of creative innovation at MasterClass, while members of the existing HitRecord team will join MasterClass in departments across content production, product design, engineering and marketing.
As part of the transition, the site’s class projects will wind down. Past videos will be made available for free on the HitRecord website, and none of the content or data from HitRecord’s community members have been sold to MasterClass. HitRecord will also no longer produce high-value collaborative projects across TV, books, records, live shows, brand partnerships and social impact campaigns with the HitRecord community, but the company’s traditional productions across film and TV in the entertainment industry — which have included films and TV shows like Don Jon, Mr. Corman and Wolfboy and the Everything Factory — will still continue.
The HitRecord website and community platform will also continue to operate independently from MasterClass.
“HitRecord’s mission has always been to help more and more people be creative, and I believe that teaching and learning is at the center of fulfilling that mission,” Gordon-Levitt said in a statement. “MasterClass is the gold standard for online learning. As a part of the MasterClass team, I think we’re going to be able to help people find and grow their creative selves more than ever before.”
David Rogier, the founder and CEO of MasterClass, praised Gordon-Levitt, Geller and the HitRecord team as a “natural fit” for MasterClass. “MasterClass and HitRecord share an appreciation for lifelong learning and passion for skills-based content and communicatio,” Rogier said. “As we continue to innovate and make strategic hires, we’re excited to have Joe, Jared and members of their team join MasterClass.”
