Welcome to episode 109 of TV’s Top 5, The Hollywood Reporter‘s TV podcast.
Every week, hosts Lesley Goldberg (West Coast TV editor) and Daniel Fienberg (chief TV critic) break down the latest TV news with context from the business and critical sides, welcome showrunners, executive and other guests and provide a critical guide of what to watch (or skip, as the case may be).
This week’s five topics are:
1. Paramount+, decoded.
If you listen to TV’s Top 5, nothing from the three-hour-plus Paramount+ investor presentation surprised you. The streamer is being rebranded from CBS All Access to better reflect the entirety of ViacomCBS with franchise from across the media conglomerate reflected in the expansion plan. From Inside Amy Schumer, Beavis and Butt-head, Yo MTV Raps, RuPaul’s Drag Race, Younger and Criminal Minds, the streamer is either rebooting or revisiting or reclaiming content from its linear siblings. This segment runs through the big announcements and takes a broader look at how relevant Paramount+ will be at its (re-)launch.

2. Marvel boss meets the press.
Marvel mastermind Kevin Feige made his debut before the Television Critics Association this week with updates on the future of WandaVision and if any of the upcoming Disney+ series will be renewable assets. This segment runs through the highlights from Feige’s debut before the press.
3. Golden Globes controversy.
The Golden Globes are this weekend on NBC but ahead of the ceremony, an exposé from the L.A. Times puts a huge ethical cloud around the telecast. THR‘s awards guru — and Awards Chatter host — Scott Feinberg joins the show to discuss the HFPA’s troubles, preview the virtual telecast and pick a few winners.
4. Showrunner Spotlight.
It’s a Sin creator Russell T. Davies joins the podcast this week for an in-depth interview about his U.K. hit, which recently debuted on HBO Max. The five-episode series explores the onset of the AIDS crisis in London and marks an evolution for the creator of such other LGBTQ-focused series as Queer as Folk, Cucumber and more. Davies opens up about why It’s a Sin, a longtime passion project, had to come after he created a show like Queer as Folk and touches on why the Doctor Who and Torchwood grad won’t ever return to the world of science fiction.
5. Critic’s Corner.
As usual, every episode ends with Dan’s guide to what to watch (or skip) in the week ahead. This week, he weighs in on NBC’s Debris and Netflix’s Notorious BIG doc.
Hear it all now on TV’s Top 5. Be sure to subscribe to the podcast to never miss an episode. (Reviews welcome!) You can also email us with any topics or Mailbag questions you’d like to be addressed in future episodes at TVsTop5@THR.com.
