American soul singer and songwriter Willie Wright has died, record label Numero Group has announced. He was 80 years old. Find Numero’s full statement below.

The news of Wright’s death was also posted on his official website. “We are sad to announce the passing of our dear friend and musical collaborator Willie Wright earlier this month in Providence, Rhode Island, U.S.A.,” the statement reads. It continues, “In addition to his family and many friends, he leaves legions of loyal fans worldwide, who will keep his unique musical legacy alive.”

Wright’s career as a performer began in the 1960s, when he sang with doo-wop groups. His solo career was lengthy, but Wright cut only a handful of records in his many decades as an artist. His debut solo album Lack of Education arrived in 1971 and featured songs that he penned and tracks by other artists such as Sly Stone, James Taylor, and George Harrison.

Telling the Truth was perhaps Wright’s best-known LP. Initially released in 1977, Numero Group reissued the record in 2011, introducing Wright to an entirely new audience and generation.
