Altuzarra: The Foundation Of This Season's Wardrobe Is Tailoring

This article is more than 4 years old.

Fashion is a business that is affected by the same technological advancements, capital investment and economic forces (think taxes on Chinese goods -being a hot topic right now) that affect other major industries in the world. You see fashion influences the automotive, housing and entertainment industries for starters, and like these industries, it is shaped by the basic principles of business and economics.

Let it go done in the great books of history that the business of fashion contributes significantly to the robust economic engine of our great nation, and the world, through the materials and services it purchases, the wages and momentous taxes it pays, and finally, the goods and services that it produces. In the United States, the fashion business is one of the largest employers in the country!

In the ever-changing rapid pace of the industry, the four different levels of the fashion business known as the primary, secondary level, retail level and auxiliary level are composed of separate entities. However, they also work interdependently to provide the market with merchandise that will satisfy consumers. It is because of this unique relationship among the respective industries that the fashion business is unusually exciting.

Within this feature, I am going to express how each and every women play out their individuality with the adornment of her person. The adornment of the body is usually developed with keen sense of the tricks and shapes that one can play with to display or even at various times cover areas of choice. In fact, many clothing authorities read a clear message into alternate exposure as well as covering up various parts of the body.

As we move forward into the SS 2020 collections, it is exiting to note that there are newly exposed erogenous zones that perhaps would not have been sexually stimulating during the last decade. At present, we are viewing the ever-shifting erogenous zones but never quite having the time to catch up with them.  No need to fear. The rule is that if you almost catch up, you'll be celebrated as a fashion leader.

The pieces of the women’s fashion game are played out by various parts of the female body: waist, shoulders, chest, hips, neckline, legs, feet as well as the figure as a whole.  And lastly, allow me to inform you that historically speaking, as attention to a part of the anatomy reaches a saturation point, the fashion spotlight will suddenly shift to another portion just like that!

The first year I started at Forbes in 2011, I had the privilege of working with designer Joseph Altuzarra for the first ever Forbes edition of the 30 under 30. Upon reviewing his collection back I was intrigued by the use of color, textures and points of exaggerated contact with the female form. Now, nine years later, his SS 2020 collection has an modified and sophisticated  sense of style to bring us into the second decade of the 21st century!

The inspiration for the Spring Summer 2020 collection came from sweaters that his  grandmother and his mother hand-knit for him. They were made with so much love and care; "I will always cherish them, one day passing them on down to my children. My mother taught me how to knit as a boy, and I have continued this craft in preparation for my growing family. This season, I wanted to explore the idea of heirlooms, familial treasures and passed-down pieces of clothing; those items of special sentimental value that are handed down from one generation to another, tying the present to the past. I was interested in how a new generation gives these inherited and gifted items new life and meaning, sometimes repurposing, mending and altering them before passing them on. I was also interested in the idea of archetypal clothing, classics that you come back to, time and time again."  says Altuzarra.

Knit crochet dresses mimic the handmade bedspreads my grandmother made for her home in the south of France; afghan doilies and granny-square blankets that my mom would make are re-interpreted as colorful sleeveless tops; classic polka dot “carré” of silk scarves are reimagined as knotted handkerchief dresses; striped dresses of spliced silk jacquard take inspiration from the patterns of ties and silk scarves, bequeathed by a relative; striped shirts like those my father wore to work are patchworked and elongated into dresses, sliced by button plackets; embroidered dresses reminiscent of my mother’s cherished slips, are layered on top of one another, creating an interplay of opacity and transparency.

The foundation of this season’s wardrobe is tailoring, a pillar of the brand: suits are shown mismatched and layered over shirts and gauzy sweaters, a patchwork of fabrics and colors, playing with codes of classical dressing. The suit is also shown in its purest form, uncomplicated and effortless, to highlight the cut of the jacket and pant, emphasizing its timeless appeal.

And what's even more exciting, this season marks the introduction of the new top handle Cuff Bag. Crafted in soft calfskin leather, the bag marries pragmatism and seduction. Two metal cufflinks adorn the opening of the bag, pinching either side. The Cuff Bag is offered in six timeless colorways: Americana, Saddle, Latte, Black, Dusty blue and Bordeaux.
