Pusha-T Breaks Down ‘Daytona,’ Drake Disses & Kanye’s Politics On ‘For The Record’

G.O.O.D. Music president Pusha-T returns this week with Daytona, his first full-length release since 2015’s King Push – Darkness Before Dawn: The Prelude. In the latest episode of Genius' For the Record, Pusha discussed his political differences with Kanye, the reasoning behind Daytona’s truncated length, and the Drake diss track “Infrared.”

During the conversation, Pusha addressed how he has dealt with Kanye’s support of President Trump. “We don’t even debate. He just knows that I’m 150,000 percent against it,” he said. “We acknowledge that we have stances, that we have different stances. But no, it’s no real political debate. It’s really nothing to debate with me, in all honesty. My stance is so real.”

On the topic of cutting the album down to seven tracks, Pusha said it was the first argument he had with Kanye about the project. “Ye was just on seven,” he recalled. “He was just like, ‘Man, listen, I feel like it’s a strong number. I feel like we can get everything we need to get across in seven.’ You know, it was just about putting your best foot forward, and really tearing people’s faces off, in that short compact amount of time.”

Finally, Pusha explained why he mentions Quentin Miller, the alleged ghostwriter of Drake’s “R.I.C.O.” verse, on “Infrared.” He pointed to Drake’s disses on 2017’s “Two Birds, One Stone,” saying, “You know I heard it, I felt like, ‘Okay.’ I can’t have an argument about how real I am.” He further elaborated, “It all depends on what you know, what you claim to be, you know what I’m saying? Like, you say T.I. and Dre. Man, Dre is super producer extraordinaire, like I’m not holding Dre, and I don’t think Dre is proclaiming anything other than being a super producer who can put these songs and albums together.”
