Mark Kozelek has shared a new song titled “Day in America.” The new song was recorded shortly after the school shooting in Parkland, Florida on February 14, in which a former student gunned down 17 people. In the lyrics, Kozelek addresses the shooting, decrying the lack of gun control laws in America. “The Republicans believe in their right to bear arms/No matter the rising death toll and the amount of harm it causes to innocent people,” he says near the beginning of the 15-minute track.

Later on (around the 8:15 mark), he returns to the topic of the shooting, saying, “I think they should go Django Unchained on the killer they caught/Hang him upside down and cut off his balls.” Kozelek continues, “Escorting this man from the planet is in everyone's best interest/When a guy kills 17 kids, dispose of him quick and fast.” The song concludes with a spoken word section by actor Kevin Corrigan. It is available to download on the Sun Kil Moon website.

“Day in America” is the first single from a newly announced Sun Kil Moon record with Donny McCaslin, the saxophonist who collaborated with David Bowie on Blackstar. That album is titled Mark Kozelek with Donny McCaslin and Jim White and is due out in 2019. Mark Kozelek is also set to release a new self-titled album on May 11.
