Wim Wenders takes us behind-the-scenes of his Jil Sander campaign

The legendary filmmaker explains the concept behind SS18 series ‘Paused By’ in a new short film

New Jil Sander design duo Lucie and Luke Meier are settling into their roles at the design house, first presenting their inaugural collection in September, and now the accompanying campaign.

To showcase the SS18 collection, they enlisted acclaimed filmmaker Wim Wenders – best known for directing Wings of Desire and Paris, Texas – to create five narrative films. The series, entitled “Paused By”, sees a handful of actors shot across Berlin in captivatingly confusing scenes, all of which are paused at arresting moments – begging a myriad of questions.

Now, granting us exclusive behind the scenes access to the filming of “Paused By” is a new short documentary directed by Hubert Woroniecki. Narrated by Wenders, it provides us with real insight into his creative process, highlighting how even veteran directors such as himself must overcome challenges. “I’ve never done anything like this thing,” he says, “shooting five stories in two days with the same five actors.”

He also explains his choice to use pauses to punctuate the narrative of each film. “The idea of pausing is a very interesting story element because all of a sudden, everybody who watches imagines what’s happening next,” he concedes. For now, only two of the five films have been released, meaning fans of Jil Sander have the following three and the upcoming AW18 show to look forward to.
